Warning spoilers ahead for the pilot of Superman and Lois!
As a #Supergirl fan I was skeptical of the thought of a #Superman show, especially starting the same year as the last season of Supergirl, the pilot, however, had me presently surprised.
For starters, I was very impressed with the quality of the production! The wide shot was very cinematic and the whole show looked very high budget. #SupermanandLois could be the start of more #CW #Arrowverse / HBO partnerships which could mean gone are the days with the mediocre quality and hello to cinematic superhero TV shows! There were also quite a few notable #Vancouver spots featured in the pilot which you can see more about in the tweet below.
Another thing done well was the writing, the pilot of Superman & Lois had that same feel similar to The Flash pilot and that same feeling of heart as the other Arrowverse shows. I was a bit worried that this show would totally overshadow Supergirl and everything the show had worked up over the past 6 seasons, the pilot did a very good job of removing this worry. Supergirl is a show revolving around Supergirl’s journey as a #superhero and her #Superfriends, Superman and #Lois is a show about the Kent family and the family dynamics and Clark balancing being a Dad with being Superman.
Speaking of #ClarkKent, I was also quite happy with how they made #Lois and #Clark a team. I also liked how they made it so Lois had her own life too and didn’t feel like a sidekick to Clark. I’m hoping we get to see more of a storyline of her being a strong woman independent and working together with Clark.
As for the #Kent brothers, I liked how only #Jordan got the powers and not both of them as it was quite clear that Jonathan is the golden child so Jordan getting powers levels the playing field for both of them. The only struggle I may see coming for #Jonathan is him reversing roles with Jordan and becoming a bit of an outcast and maybe having issues at school due to this. I think that both of them will be having issues at school and in the next few episodes, we will be seeing both brothers navigating their new school and perhaps Jordan having anger issues with his powers and learning to manage them, especially after the fight at the party.
The pilot also created a lot of questions for me. For starters what time period does the show take place in relative to the Arrowverse. When we left the #Crisis #crossover the twins were only babies so if they're 16 does that mean that the show takes place 15 years later than the other shows currently do? How will this affect crossovers? It seems like we will be getting some Supergirl crossovers in the future.
My biggest question from the cliffhanger is who is Captain Luthor and is he at all related to the #LexLuthor we saw in Supergirl? I tried looking up #CaptainLuthor on the Arrowverse Wiki and DC Database and was unable to find anything however I did find an article on Newsweek with quite an interesting theory:
At the end of Crisis on Infinite Earths, all of the over multiverse versions of Earth were destroyed, leaving only what is called #EarthPrime, the world where all the Arrowverse shows take place. This destruction of all the other Earths has led to refugees from across these worlds showing up in other Arrowverse shows. Captain Luthor seems like the latest of these other Earth refugees, an alternate Earth version of Supergirl's Lex Luthor.
This was hinted at in the episode during Captain Luthor and Superman's big battle. In this, the former said: "My world was destroyed, but somehow I managed to survive. I eventually arrived here, where I learned you were here too."
This is quite an interesting theory and I don’t see anything stopping it from being true. It would also further separate Supergirl from Superman as the original Lex Luthor has already been taken. Leading to my final point, my opinion on the effect the show has on Supergirl.
Like I said earlier, I was skeptical about this show as I was worried it would just be a Supergirl rip-off shattering all the progress Supergirl had made, which I was quite happy to have proven wrong. The show did a good job of differentiating the two shows. The theme of Supergirl is her journey as a hero, hope and compassion. Superman and Lois’ theme is family dynamics balanced with a splash of superhero action! After the pilot I’m now very excited for the first season, I think we can expect some great things from this show.
Hi its Robert DROWNey Jr. from arrowverse wiki discord. This is actually a pretty good blog. I shall be here more often.
