The Greatest Cosplay Mistakes I’ve Ever Made

Updated: Oct 23, 2022

I’ve cosplayed for a while now and although I do not consider myself and expert I have learned a lot along the way. Hopefully you can learn from some of my regrets.

Heat Wave Horrors

Summertime, no school, no rain to fear wouldn’t it be the perfect time to cosplay? Well, there’s a looming threat that unfortunately I overlooked last year on a trip to Vancouver Island. Since I didn’t feel I wore my White Canary cosplay enough I planned a cosplay excursion for myself to Hatley Castle on Vancouver Island. You may recognize Hatley Castle from TV/Shows such as “X-Men”, “Arrow” or “Descendants”. It was a hot Summer day, I think it was around 30 celsius though there was a nice breeze by the ocean (this comes into play later). It was not all bad as I was able to get a couple nice photos in but after walking around for a bit then I feel the nice breeze… Under my arm! The heat caused the leather material, which was already difficult to move in to melt ripping a whole in the suit. Luckily, I had a change of clothes in the car so I got changed in the back seat which I was already an expert on doing the same on BC Ferries earlier in the week.

No Pain No Gain

When my original Supergirl boots started peeling I ordered nicer higher quality replacements. These replacements were great but adding on to another heat wave horror as they were filming the Supergirl finale. Breaking into these new shoes cause giant and deep blisters on my feet. The bottom of my feet and side of my toes were sliced open pink red and when I got home from standing in the sun for six hours I find my lovely white sock coloured pink from blood. Now that I broke them in they work great but it was a painful experience at the time.

Wind V.S. Cape

Last November I decided to plan a fun excursion to the legendary Vancouver Barge also known as Barge Chilling Beach. The problem with this was although it was a sunny day it was November and the wind having just been after a storm that brought the barge to us was insane. As soon as I walked within three blocks of Sunset Beach the wind was whipping my hair and cape an insane amount. I seriously do not understand how superheroes can fly in the sky where it’s so windy, I’d need goggles.
